Someone recently asked me a question and I can't come up with a good answer.
According to NFHS rules, if a player is injured or otherwise unable to shoot a free throw, the coach can use any elligible subsitute to shoot the free throws in place of that player. Obviously, this leaves open the possibility of "faking" an injury in order to get a better shooter at the line, but hopefully most coaches are better than that... Anyway, is there ever a situation where the opposing coach gets to choose the shooter? I thought I remember from my HS playing days that this was the case, but who knows. Did this used to be a rule or is it a rule in college or the NBA? Thanks! |

It is the rule in the NBA; at least, it was the last time I studied NBA rules a couple seasons ago. If a player is unable to shoot his merited FTs, he may leave the game but may NOT return, and the opposing coach gets to pick who shoots the FTs. The exception to this is if the player's injury is the result of an unsportsmanlike act by the opponent. In that case, the injured player may return and his own coach chooses the FT shooter.
Rule 9, Section II (a), Exception (1) and (2). NBA Q & A # 180 (pg. 38). Those citations are from the '01-'02 NBA book. Sorry I don't have anything more recent.
