It is the rule in the NBA; at least, it was the last time I studied NBA rules a couple seasons ago. If a player is unable to shoot his merited FTs, he may leave the game but may NOT return, and the opposing coach gets to pick who shoots the FTs. The exception to this is if the player's injury is the result of an unsportsmanlike act by the opponent. In that case, the injured player may return and his own coach chooses the FT shooter.
