Question

DBREF,

Why would you want to drive 62 miles in traffic to do a basketball game? Do you not have enough schools in your area?

Kinda depends on the level of the game, doesn't it? I've driven from Springfield, MA to NYC a couple times. . .

Whats it like to work in the DC area? I was up there this summer for a week "vacation" and I wondered what it would be like to live and referee up there. Come to think of it. I didnt see any schools directly in the DC area.

Here in San Diego, CA our fees for a varsity game are $55 and a JV game is $40. I have traveled out to games which have been cancelled without my knowledge, and I have always been paid for them.

Whether or not you get paid has nothing to do with the money -- it has to do with respect for your time and effort. Also, when I schedule a game that gets canceled, frequently I could've worked a different game instead, but blocked off my schedule since I already had a game booked.

If a school can get away without paying for someone that drives to the school, what incentive do they have to call in a timely manner?

Rich

That is how far away some of the schools are. We have about 90 HS in the northern VA area and it just keeps getting larger. Had a GV game last night at a school that just opened this year and we have 3 more schools set to open next year. Granted, 62 miles is not the norm and would only happen a couple of times a season, but it does happen. When I was a JV official, my assignor would call me and "asked me very nicely" if I could go do that game rather than my original assignment and 90% of the time, I would go. She would then reward me with a GV game (not a top game, but varsity nonetheless). Worked OK for me.

The picture of him on a pogo stick, with a referee's shirt on and his whistle flying, just a hoppin' down the freeway just flashed through my mind.

Nah, I think that he probably came via his usual way:

Oh yeah, lay it on poor old Woody! Who brought up the pogo stick in the first place? Who e-mailed the picture of the squirrel to me? Etc.,Etc.,Etc.

Yup, push the buzzer and watch the old guy respond. Hell,at least the rats get pellets when they're done!
