Not enough info, Rocky. We need to know where his feet were when he caught the ball, and what his feet did after he caught it.
If he caught the ball in the air, landed on his right foot, then jumped onto his left foot and shot the ball -- that's legal. That's what it sounds like to me. If that's not what you're envisioning, let us have some more details. Welcome to the Forum!!

It depends on if the second foot hits the floor before the ball is released.
When A2 takes one step forward (lets say his right foot), then his left foot becomes the pivot foot. He can spin all around or whatever on that pivot foot. He decides not to dribble. Now, if he lifts his pivot foot (left), he must pass or try for goal (release the ball) before that pivot foot hits the floor again. If the foot comes down and he is still holding the ball, it is a travel. I bet you see that one NOT called quite often, usually the giant steps and shoot maneuver. |

reset traveling situation
To reset the situation:
A1 (not being guarded) is standing 5 feet beyond the 3pt arc (both feet on the floor) ready to receive a pass so he can attempt a 3pt shoot. A2 while in the front court passes the ball to A1. A1 catches the ball (still with both feet on the floor). Without dribbling he takes a giant step forward with right foot then brings his left foot forward so that both feet are on the floor then he shoots the ball. Is this traveling? What if after he received the pass from A2 bounced the ball once before he took the giant step forward. Does this make any difference? Thanks in advance |

In both cases the pivot foot retouched the floor while the player was holding the ball. |
