Saw tis at my son's 8th gread game today--I think i know what i would have done but...
Game goes into overtime--the officials start the overtime with a jump ball however they have the teams pointed in the wrong direction-Team B scores off the jump into the basket they were pointed to (should have been Team A's basket)- Team inbounds ball under basket and one of the players realizes this should be their teams basket and shots and scores. Coaches go wild--Officials meet and give each team two points and have them then go in the proper direction--though this seems fair is it right? I think by rule Team B would get credit for both baskets then the officials could get them pointed in the right direction. I don't think a player can correct a mistake by the officiails. Love to hear your thoughts |

That's a good one. The only cases they seem to put in the book is when both teams go toward the wrong baskets until someone realizes it. Can't wait to hear the opinions on this one. I have no clue what the "right thing to do" would be.

4-5-4 If by mistake the officials permit a team to go the wrong direction, when discovered all points scored....shall count as if each team had gone the proper direction. Play shall resume with each team going the proper direction...
The officials "permitted" team B to go the wrong way on the first basket by facing them the wrong way on the jump. The mistake was "discovered" when team A player scored in the correct basket. Officials should have then stopped play and straightened everyone out and play should have resumed with team B inbounding the ball and going the right way and 2 points on the board for each team.

My answer (probably not supported by the rules) --
The ball became dead when A realized the error and started the "uncontested" score. I just couldn't get the whistel blown in time. So, 2 points for B and A gets the ball back. |

Excellent thought Bob - hope you could have that thought in real time and not just reflecting after the fact. I can't see giving the points to B, and I also can't see rewarding A for this maneuver. Your approach solves it all.

I guess that would be right about the ball being dead, no whistle in time, etc. The key to that would be not to allow A to score their basket uncontested. I still don't see any way that you could award all the points to B. That would be penalizing A for shooting at the right basket when everyone else was wrong.

If there are merited FTs that are not awarded and A makes a throwin and scores a 3 with a foul on the shooter. A can, if the error is then discovered, Team A may actually get a 6 point trip. It behooves B to make sure team A gets the proper FTs. In this case, the OT was started with the basket being B's basket....dictated by the lineup. Until the officials change that, it remains B's basket. The was nothing to make the ball dead unless the whistle was actually blown before the ball went it. Therefore, A put a live ball into B's basket. If A knows that everything is the wrong way, they can not remain quiet and take advantage of it. I don't think they should get to try to pull it off on purpose without consequence. On the other hand, I can also see the argument for giving B 2 points and giving A the ball with no additional points for A or B. In any case, there is NO way the points count for A. |
