As for this, you bet. By rule, you may confer w// the scorer on any 'correctable error,' admin. So, go for it. One problem w/ doing this, though, is two-fold: 1) It takes too long, and 2) you look uncertain and doubting which takes away from your credibility as an official.

I've made every mistake in the book at least twice, and here's how I've dealt with this one. To prevent it, if your concern is to keep an eye on the injured player, and the foul-er isn't turning so you can see her humber, then look at her socks, or hair, or anything that you'll remember, THEN look down at the injured player. You'll be able to spot the distinctive characteristic in a few minutes, and get a number. I've gotten into this habit, anyway, just as a precautionary measure.
But if it still happens, when you report, you don't go to the reporting area you walk directly over to the table in a very assertive and confident manner, and lean over to discuss it quietly with the scorer. Before you get there, you "pick a number" which ever seems most plausible. Then you lean over, say "Did you see who that foul should be on?" Whatever she says, you say, "Great, that's what I thought, too." If she didn't see, say, "I'm almost sure it was 33, but I was distracted by the falling down, and wanted to be sure." Then step back from the table and do the reporting thing.
