Not that some guys ever call it....
One of our test questions was: Player A1 has position in the free throw lane, as A2 is dribbling the ball in his front court. A2's dribble gets loose after deflection off his foot. A1 remains in the lane for more than three seconds. Ruling: Three second violation on A1. True or False I seem to have found a contradiction in my books. Opinions and documentation, please.

good question. If memory serves me right last year there was a rule/interpretation change that said that during an interrupted dribble team possesion is maintained and therefore 3 second counts continue. However the editors of the case book wrote there was no "three-second count during rebounding action or during a throw-in or INTERRUPTED DRIBBLE." (my caps) then an editing change came out and said to delete the words "or interrupted dribble"
I just checked my new case book and the words are still there. I can't remember why I crossed the words "interrupted dribble" out of my case book last year. I think I saw that on the NFHS website. |

You are correct to delete the words "INTERRUPTED DRIBBLE."
The rule was changed last year. What people don't realize is that the case book does NOT get updated every year. I thinhk this fact should be made CLEAR to the reader. My case book is part of my IAABO (all in one) publication which is mostly the NFHS books bound together. There is no notification that the case book is not updated every year. So case book plays are sometimes (now) wrong. I got this info from my IAABO Board interpreter who I believe is correct. |

What is the case in question? |

9-7-2 in the case book.
"...However, there is no three-second count during rebounding action or during a throw-in or interrrupted dribble." Looks like NFHS changed Rule 9-7 for the 02-03 season. The press release on their web site reads: " Rule 9-7 was changed to delete the requirement for the three-second count to be terminated during an interrupted dribble. Since team control is still in effect the count should continue. The rule was inconsistent with the rule concerning a loose ball." So I think there is a violation. Call (800)776-3462. This is the order line directly to the NF and you can order any of the rulebooks and their stuff that might help you officiate or even coach.
All this information is also in the back of the rulebook as well. Peace
