I almost think this 'get the whistle out of your mouth during a jumpball' thing is a holdover from the days of metal whistles (and peas). A metal whistle would likely chip a tooth if you were hit... not sure I would see chipped tooth from a plastic whistle... perhaps but would it really have more to do with the elbow rather than anything to do with the whistle?

I still spit mine out but wonder why everytime I do it.

Also during a jump ball, wear a cup for the rare (but all too often) low, swinging hand.
It only happened once, ...so far.
