“Rule 9-2 Penalty clarified that when an infraction occurs on a throw-in, the location of the violation is the original throw-in spot. If the original throw-in spot is not a designated spot, the ensuing throw-in is moved to such a spot.”

I believe that this says to return to the original throw-in location and administer the ensuing throw-in from there if this location is one of the eight magic spots, but if not we need to move the location to the nearest of the eight magic spots.

The quoted text tells me a T-I violation subsequent an OOB violation would go back to the OOB spot.

The second sentence states to move it.

Or clarify which violations move the ball? There are very few violations that even apply.

BTW, this is an editorial change they made on this situation.

Quote:

SECTION 2 THROW-IN PROVISIONS

PENALTY: (Section 2) The ball becomes dead when the violation or technical foul occurs. The location of the violation is the original throw-in spot. Following a violation:

Rationale: Prior to the implementation of designated throw-in spots, the location of the violation for all throw-in violations was the original throw-in spot. This was stated in 9-2 Penalty (see Rules Book 2023-24, page 61). With the new protocols for determining throw-in spots, the language referring to the original throw-in shot was inadvertently dropped this season. While most of the common violations during a throw-in occur with the ball and player at the original spot, some of the less common ones (9-2-2, 9-2-3, 9-2 6, 9-2-7, 9-2-8, etc..) do not happen there. This has led to questions about where to put the ball in play. Adding the language above continues the protocol of all throw-in violations occurring at the spot of the original throw-in. If the original throw-in spot is not a designated spot, then the ensuing throw-in is moved to such a spot (as per Diagram 5). This is defined in a and b of the Penalty section.
Peace

This is a "word salad" and needs a "lot of splaining" (with apologies to Ricky Ricardo).

It would certainly be nice to have the actual text wording of 9-2-2, 9-2-3, 9-2 6, 9-2-7, 9-2-8, etc., available.

I can't find 9-2-Et Cetera.

Seriously, some articles have been skipped, so how does that work with Et Cetera?

Besides that, it's still a "word salad".

Maybe needs some ranch dressing?

I believe that this says to return to the original throw-in location and administer the ensuing throw-in from there if this location is one of the eight magic spots, but if not we need to move the location to the nearest of the eight magic spots.
I'm going to assume -- more like "hope," really -- that what they're getting at is if the original throw-in is not from a designated spot, i.e., a throw-in during which you can run the endline, then the post-violation spot will be from the nearest (marked) designated spot ... which is already customary for violations during run-the-endline TIs, as we all know.

I wholeheartedly agree the unclear wording has opened up the valid speculation in this thread -- and created this opportunity for horrifically cumbersome naming suggestions for the eight marked spots -- but I'm hoping against hope they're just talking about the endline ones after made/awarded goals and have just done a poor job messaging/wording it so far.

Unless the scoring team commits a violation or common foul and the throw-in location would be the end-line, in which case the inbounding team can still run the end-line.
