Magic Spots ...

We've been debating on what to call these eight "magic spots" over the past two years.

(Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. came up with a particularly terrible suggestion, "Designated Spot Throw-in Designated Throw-in Spot.)

In doing some research on this new rule, I came across this terminology:

"Pre-Marked Designated Throwin Spots".

Perfect!

I like it, it's a great way to differentiate these eight spots from other designated throwin spots (like for out of blonds throwins).

Pre-Marked Designated Throwin Spots © 2026 Billy Mac

I utilized a Poor Man's Copyright and put this in a sealed self addressed stamped envelope sent it to myself, so as soon as it's post marked by the USPS it will be official.

Marked spots is easier and less eye roll

The only person I know debating this seriously was you. I did not hear a lot of people anywhere really struggling with the throw-in spots. The only issue might come up if they threw the ball out of bounds, there was a conversation or two about does it go back to the original spot if the spot was not one of the 4 locations. Otherwise, hardly ever heard this, even as a problem.

Peace

“Rule 9-2 Penalty clarified that when an infraction occurs on a throw-in, the location of the violation is the original throw-in spot. If the original throw-in spot is not a designated spot, the ensuing throw-in is moved to such a spot.”

I believe that this says to return to the original throw-in location and administer the ensuing throw-in from there if this location is one of the eight magic spots, but if not we need to move the location to the nearest of the eight magic spots.

A few (i.e., Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.) offered suggestions as to exactly what to call these eight (originally four) spots to differentiate them from "ordinary" (out of bound throwins) designated spots.

It may have been me who first suggested "magic spots" (after the song Magic Bus, The Who, 1968) and it has since been used by others on this Forum.

I actually like SNIPERBBB's suggesttion of "marked spots".

I need to quickly find an envelope and a stamp to beat SNIPERBBB to the copyright.

I stole this idea from a local drive time radio announcer who used the phrase "magic bus" to denigrate Connecticut's idea to make limited access bus only roads (not just lanes but entirely newly built bus only roads, many built on abandened railroad corridors) to encourage commuters to use this form of public transportation, especially in the Greater Hartford area.

Turned out to be a great idea. Many new successful apartment buildings and retail, commercial, and manufacturing complexes were built along these "magic bus" roadways.

By the way, the local drive time radio announcer, a former corrupt high state level politician, ended up in prison, again.

The quoted text tells me a T-I violation subsequent an OOB violation would go back to the OOB spot.

The second sentence states to move it.

Then they need to change the name of the eight spots. Since an OOB throw-in is a designated spot throw-in, I guarantee officials are going to confuse it with a throw-in from a "designated spot" marking.

I suggest, “Pre-Marked Designated Throwin Spots”.

SNIPERBBB suggests, “Marked Spots".

Of course, anytime we refer to them we can always describe them as, “one of the eight marked designated spots”.

Next year, these eight spots (or four spots) will have been around for three years and the NFHS is still trying to deal with a few complexities.

95% (probably more) of the time it's pretty simple. Out of bounds goes to a designated spot nearest the out of bounds violation. Any other violation or foul goes to the nearest of one of the eight marked designated spots.

It's the other 5% (probably less) of the time that some officials, and apparently the NFHS, struggle with (most are throwin violations).

Get one of these "complex" situations wrong in the first period of a game and nobody will know, care, or remember.

But get one of these "complex" situations wrong (and it possibly affects the outcome) in the last seconds of a late season game and it will be all over the front page, above the fold, of the local newspaper's sports section.

Absolutely correct! The unclear language used by the NFHS is going to cause confusion.

I like “marked throw-in spot” vs designated-spot throw-in.

I’m going to suggest this to the Nevada representative currently on the NFHS rules committee.

I'm going to assume -- more like "hope," really -- that what they're getting at is if the original throw-in is not from a designated spot, i.e., a throw-in during which you can run the endline, then the post-violation spot will be from the nearest (marked) designated spot ... which is already customary for violations during run-the-endline TIs, as we all know.

I wholeheartedly agree the unclear wording has opened up the valid speculation in this thread -- and created this opportunity for horrifically cumbersome naming suggestions for the eight marked spots -- but I'm hoping against hope they're just talking about the endline ones after made/awarded goals and have just done a poor job messaging/wording it so far.

Unless the scoring team commits a violation or common foul and the throw-in location would be the end-line, in which case the inbounding team can still run the end-line.

Or clarify which violations move the ball? There are very few violations that even apply.

BTW, this is an editorial change they made on this situation.

Quote:

SECTION 2 THROW-IN PROVISIONS

PENALTY: (Section 2) The ball becomes dead when the violation or technical foul occurs. The location of the violation is the original throw-in spot. Following a violation:

Rationale: Prior to the implementation of designated throw-in spots, the location of the violation for all throw-in violations was the original throw-in spot. This was stated in 9-2 Penalty (see Rules Book 2023-24, page 61). With the new protocols for determining throw-in spots, the language referring to the original throw-in shot was inadvertently dropped this season. While most of the common violations during a throw-in occur with the ball and player at the original spot, some of the less common ones (9-2-2, 9-2-3, 9-2 6, 9-2-7, 9-2-8, etc..) do not happen there. This has led to questions about where to put the ball in play. Adding the language above continues the protocol of all throw-in violations occurring at the spot of the original throw-in. If the original throw-in spot is not a designated spot, then the ensuing throw-in is moved to such a spot (as per Diagram 5). This is defined in a and b of the Penalty section.
Peace
