Fun With A Step Back …

IAABO Make The Call Video

https://storage.googleapis.com/refqu...mMy8Nw9w%3D%3D

Was this move correctly ruled a traveling violation? Which foot was pivot foot? Was it lifted and placed back to the floor before attempting the try?

Two choices: This is a traveling violation. This is a legal move.

My comment: This is a traveling violation. Her left foot was her pivot foot. She lifted her pivot foot for a shot and returned the pivot foot to the floor before the shot was released.

Easy travel.

Why does L rotate through the shot? Why is C so deep?

I usually don't post easily interpreted, non-controversial, IAABO Make The Call Videos.

Now that the high school and college basketball season is over, the Forum has been so quiet that I've decided to post all the IAABO Make The Call Videos that come across my computer desk, no matter how boring.

Hopefully this will keep the Forum from lapsing into a comatose vegetative state that it may not have the ability to survive.

Easy travel. No conversation even to have about it.

Terrible coverage mechanics from the crew.

Lead needs to stop at the lane line before rotating so that he doesn't rotate during a shot.

Old Trail is ball-watching and doesn't even notice that the Lead is rotating.

Calling official improperly bails out of her Center positioning. At what point in officiating mechanics history was it taught to run away from the ball because it moved into your primary?

It is a travel. Not sure why she is leaving a good look on this play. No reason to rotate or move from her spot. But she got the play right IMO.

Peace

IAABO Survey Says …

Disclaimer: Below is not a NFHS interpretation, it's only an IAABO interpretation which obviously doesn't mean a hill of beans to most members of this Forum.

IAABO Play Commentary

Correct Answer: This is a traveling violation.

The ball handler ends her dribble on her left foot and then steps backward with her right foot and then again with her left foot before trying for goal. If one foot is on the floor when the dribble ends, it is the pivot when the other foot touches in a step. (4-44-2.b.1) In this case, when the ball handler stepped with her right foot, the left foot became the pivot foot. The pivot foot may be lifted but not returned to the floor before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal. (4-44-3.a) In this play, The ball handler lifted the pivot foot and placed it back to the floor before releasing the ball to attempt the try. This is a violation and correctly ruled by the Trail official.

Here is the breakdown of the IAABO members that commented on the video: This is a traveling violation 87% (including me). This is a legal move 13%.

If you've got a 2 person crew drawn at random from this group there's a 24.3% chance that at least one of your officials thinks this isn't a travel.
If you've got a 3 person crew drawn at random from this group there's a 34.2% chance that at least one of your officials thinks this isn't a travel.

(Also even if the gather had been with the left foot in the air, the right foot gets moved during the step back too)

Why is Johann Gauss posting under youngump's username?

Constipated mathematicians work it out with a number two pencil.
