Rules By Topic vs Casebook

I have used the NFHS Rules by Topic for Years. What is the difference between this and the Casebook published by NFHS?

The casebook only has caseplays, and nothing but caseplays, and definitely doesn't include any rules, such that a rulebook is needed to cross reference the caseplays, and vice versa. The casebook is arranged in the same order as the rulebook (1-10).

And, ostensibly, any case number of the format x.y.z should directly relate to rule x-y-z.

The contents of Rules by Topic is the same as the rules book, not the case book. But the rules are presented in a different order between the rules book and Rules by Topic.

Correct. And I don’t think all of the cases are in Rules by Topic. Many of them, yes, but not all.

It’s a good book. Is it also a money-grab for NFHS, Referee Magazine and PlayPic? Absolutely. But still not bad. As a now-veteran official I don’t purchase it anymore, but when I was newer I did. Then I got to the point where I’d buy it every 2-3 years because not much changes every year (especially lately while the rules committee has been in a veritable torpor).

Now I find old copies at estate sales (true story!).

All the book entails are rules and the wording of the rules and the case plays that is in one place. It is a good resource for the major parts of the game so you do not have to go back and forth between books or have to find the right situation. Very good study book and might not be for everyone. But a very good tool to not have to look all over the place to find answers to many things.

Peace
