attempt to get up or stand

After doing a search, I see there are differing opinions on this forum as to what constitutes "attempt to get up or stand" in 4-44-5b.

Has there been anything definitive from the NFHS, any State Associations or a consensus about what is considered an "attempt to get up or stand"?

We're What'cha Call Experts ...

Attempting to get up or stand is a judgment call. That's why we get paid the big bucks. We're what'cha call experts.

4-44-5 A player holding the ball:
a. May not touch the floor with a knee or any other part of the body
other than hand or foot.
b. After gaining control while on the floor and touching with other
than hand or foot, may not attempt to get up or stand.

4.44.5 SITUATION A: Is it traveling if A1 falls to the floor:
(a) while holding the ball; or (b) after being airborne to catch a
pass or control a rebound? RULING: Yes in both (a) and (b).

4.44.5 SITUATION B: A1 dives for a loose ball and slides
after gaining control. A1 is in a position either on his/her back
or stomach. What can A1 do without violating? RULING: A1
may pass, shoot, start a dribble or request a time-out. Once A1
has the ball and is no longer sliding, he/she may not roll over.
If flat on his/her back, A1 may sit up without violating. Any
attempt to get to the feet is traveling unless A1 is dribbling. It
is also traveling if A1 puts the ball on the floor, then rises and
is first to touch the ball. (4-44-5b)

4.44.5 SITUATION C: A1 secures possession of the ball
with one knee in contact with the floor. May A1 assume a
standing position without committing a traveling violation?
RULING: It depends on what A1 does. If A1 attempts to
stand up while holding the ball, a traveling violation occurs.
However, if A1 starts a dribble and then rises, no violation has
occurred. Also, A1 could pass, try for goal or request a timeout
from that position.

No, so continue using your own opinion as to what constitutes "attempting to get up or stand." Pretty much a judgement call on your part, at least outside of items that are indeed defined by rule.

Yes. When I was a youngster, my parents would often drive past a Atlas Van Lines company just off the highway. On top to the building was a statue of Atlas, with the celestial spheres on his shoulders (I thought, at the time, that it was the world on his shoulders). Otherwise, I would just barely know who Atlas was.

I looked at the drawing, noticed what the kid said, and the what the coach said, skimmed over the kid's name, and didn't think it was funny for several seconds until I realized the importance of the kid's name.

I did take several astronomy courses in college and graduate school and knew that the Pleiades were the seven daughters of Atlas.

And I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

But I still almost missed the joke by reading it too quickly.
