For the good of the cause:
New IAABO Mechanics: End of Quarter/Period Procedures. By rule, the game clock horn signals the end of the quarter/period unless there is a ball in flight on a try for goal. Officials should not sound the whistle to signify the end of the quarter/period unless they are ruling that the try was not released prior to the sounding of the horn. Our local interpreter also encouraged us to sound our whistle after timeouts, even if we're shooting free throws. We've always whistled before a throwin after a timeout, but never before a free throw, although the free throw whistle has always been in the mechanics manual.

IAABO member here …
For me, whistle following a timeout or any delay, except when FTs are to follow. It's obvious to all and gets everyone's attention that we're resuming play when the official announces the number of FTs and bounces the ball to the thrower. And no whistle to end a quarter. At least in our area, sounding a whistle to end every quarter is a dead giveaway of a hack official. |

Book, Chapter, Verse ...
Common sense tradition passed on by oral stories told by old, grizzled, veteran officials (see Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.'s post) sitting around blazing campfires, but not by the book.

Thanks for this, I was pretty confused as I have been told at multiple camps to have a whistle to end the quarter.
