NIT Video Request

Boise State at Utah 2:22 first half. Broadcast on ESPN U.

Play involves a free throw violation. Center official calls a violation on the team that is shootinf while the lead appeared to call a violation on the defense (he put delayed deadball signal out).

I can't rewind to see what the correct call should have been, but I think this is a good video to clip to discuss free throw mechanics and the process we use to ensure we get these right.

Special thanks to Jrut for all of the video he has posted this season. Truly making us all better officials. Thank you.

I think the Lead just had a brain fart and put up the Delayed Violation signal knowing all along that A2 violated. I had a partner do that in a high school game so I came in with my whistle.

I've seen guys give the signal and blow their whistle at the same time.

Peace

It's hard to see if W21 crosses the line initially or not. L doesn't put up the delayed violation signal until B15 moves. C may have been calling the hand on the back of B15, which caused him to move early, even if W21 hadn't entered the lane yet.

Except that would be a foul, not a violation.

I'm not sure there's a push there. Just a touch that causes a reaction. I'm looking at 9-1-1-h.

I had this exact brain fart happen to me in a 7th grade boys game last month.

A1 receives the ball from my partner for the first of two free throws. After he receives the ball, A2 decides to stroll into an unoccupied lane space. I signalled a delayed violation instead of killing play immediately.

After A1 shoots and makes the try, my partner asked me "Was that violation on A?" The light bulb turns on and I immediately cancel the try and call the violation all while thinking, "How could I have kicked that?"
