Video Request: Team Warning for Delay (Video added)

11/18/16. Northern Iowa vs. Oklahoma @ Orlando (Tire Pros Invitational). ESPNU. 5:15 2nd Half.

Start sequence at ~5:15. NIU drains a 3. An NIU player getting in position for a possible rebound finds himself under the basket with a dead ball coming through the net at his feet. So, in what looked like a gesture of politeness, he grabbed the ball and tossed it to the old lead. Old lead whistles him for a delay.

I'm not sure I'd make that call. Granted there are things I may not know here, e.g. perhaps NIU was "unofficially" warned earlier for this, or perhaps OU had a penchant for quickly inbounding the ball after a basket, and the official thought that the action by the NIU player impeded this. But on it's own, it seemed pretty benign.

It's also worth noting that an official might feel more "free" to issue a delay for this in an NCAA game versus an NFHS game because collegiately, each DOG situation carries it's own warning, whereas in NFHS they are all lumped together in one basket.

Seemed like an interesting case for discussion. Hopefully one of our IT saavy members can find the clip.

Perhaps this was a way to avoid any problems later in the game by nipping it in the bud now.

Well it is done on purpose and should be called. And it was probably warned informally before. When you throw the ball to the official, you are preventing the team from going up the floor quickly. I liked the call and I did not see any other part of the game as well.

Peace

The player didn't need to do what he did. It's not as though the ball ricocheted off someone and was bouncing/rolling towards the division line. It passed through the basket [B]and[B] there was a player on OU waiting to take the ball OOB for the throw-in. Leave the ball alone.

I'm making that call every time. OU had a player trying to get it out of the net when UNI grabbed it and threw it to the ref. Get it now, then they won't do it later. It's a dumb play, and an easy call.

Interesting rules differences to note here.

In NFHS, if this or any of the other three "warning" delays occur again, it's a team T.

In NCAA, if this specific delay occurs again, it's a Class B (men's) or player/subsitute (women's) T to the offender.
