Funny Moment
Had this happen this week in a tournament. Close game in the third quarter and the other team has a decent shot blocker. My kid goes up and is fouled, not the worst foul but a foul, and out of the corner of my eye I see the official punch the sky and I'm like yes great play... but no whistle comes. So I look at the official and see him fumbling with his whistle as the other team grabs the ball and heads the other way.
As the official runs by I say "Got the signal but no whistle?" and he shrugs as he runs by. On the way back toward our end he shakes his head and says "I missed it coach sorry" and I just laughed to myself and said "Fair enough". After the game when I go to shake his hand he grabs me and pulls me close and apologizes and says he was talking to one of the kids and just got caught with his whistle out of his mouth, which I saw when it happened, and that that had never happened to him before. Just thought it was funny and the official and I shared a good laugh after the game. |

It was funny because you respect the officials and understand the avocation. You realize that the official made a simple mistake and doesn't have it out for your team. You also don't use criticism of the officials to "fire up" your team. I wish more coaches were like you.
As for not having the whistle in the mouth, that is understandable. It is food for thought. I would like to think that it wouldn't happen to me, but I realize these things happen. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk |

Had something like this happen today and it reminded me immediately of this thread.
Working trail frontcourt, ball OOB, I go to put air in the whistle, and.....spit the whole darn thing out of my mouth without making a peep. So, channeling BNR, I yell "Whistle, whistle, whistle!" Relatively quiet gym, so the timer picked it up and got the clocked stopped within a second. I owe her one. That was a first for me. |

I'm all for training officials to be more vocal on the court. One of my biggest pet peeves is not being able to discern what my partner called or what's happening next because he won't speak up. I don't think I would make officials do this, though, if I were running a camp. |

During one of my games three days ago, Visitor player goes to set a screen and trips up the home player. I blow my whistle for the TC call and after what's best described as a 1/4 chirp, the whistle pops out of my mouth . Thank goodness for lanyards.
I quickly grabbed the whistle, put it back in my mouth, blew it again, and reported the foul--doing my best to act like I hadn't missed a beat. If it ever happens again, I'll have to do my best BNR impression .
