Oklahoma vs Baylor

Believe it was the Oklahoma Baylor game last night. Balyor at the line at the end of the game down two points trying to miss the second of two free throws.
He fakes a quick throw at the basket but does not release the ball. Not sure why he did this as he was trying to miss anyway. The officials blew the play dead, talked about it and readministered the FT. Shouldn't this have been considered a "fake" and a violation. Why should he get the FT over again?

Do you happen to know when this took place in the game?

Peace

To me it looked like the thrower started his motion, an OU player (Isiah Cousins) stepped into the lane (from the top lane space), and then the thrower paused momentarily before attempting the free throw. There was some movement along the lane, so I don't know if either team violated as a result of the thrower's motion or the initial player stepping into the lane, but I thought the whistle came before the thrower released the ball suggesting there were multiple infractions. My thought was that they judged Cousin's violation to have caused the interruption in the thrower's motion, and that is why they tried to kill it before the shot.

The OU player was hoping to get the Baylor players to tip their hand on how they were going to approach the rebound and tip-in. I don't think the intent was to violate until the Baylor player made the free-throw, but rather just get some information.

Stratergery

Since OK has possession arrow, I'm guessing coaches told OK#33 to violate, in case if FT fails to hit rim. If not, then it's a do-over. Protects against miss and shooting team rebound and shot.

Pretty crafty, and something to add to list of game-ending scenarios, if I ever coach...

The next free throw should have been shot as a delayed violation because the previous free throw was blown dead.

If a team does this once, and it's clearly intentionally, I'd warn them that a second violation would be a technical foul. Specifically for allowing the game to become an actionless contest. Otherwise, what would prevent this from being repeated for eternity?

Is it a fake if it doesn't draw the opponent into the lane?

Don't do this. It's bush league and if you get an official like me I'm warning you the moment I recognize what you're doing. After the warning, if it happens it's a T for delaying the game.
