No the ball is dead once it hits the floor out of bounds. The defense deflected the ball. A patched official said the defense gets the ball after deflecting the ball out of bounds, hits the floor then touches the inbounder.

I'm not sure I could have contained laughter at that point. Similar to the other night when a guy tried to get me to count a bucket after a charge because "the ball had left his hand before he contacted the defender."

Well, that at least used to be the rule in NCAA-M. It isn't the rule anymore, but at least there is some historic basis for his ruling.

In the OP, it just doesn't make any sense at all.

Used to be the rule in HS, too.

Indeed it was. Prior to 1983 according to the NFHS Handbook.

Do we need to send Jr. into the attic? I honestly remember it being this way for as long as I knew about differences between rules, but that doesn't really mean a whole lot.

Timing sounds right -- I played in the early 80's and remember shooting 1 and 1 (there was no double bonus back then) on after-the-release charges when the shot went in. As I recall back then, refs were also far more willing to call a charge when the defender was under or nearly under the basket -- the idea being that the shooter was obligated to make his shot without making that illegal contact, even if the only reason for the defender to set up there was to make him have to make the shot under control without the contact. (Back then also true that only the NBA had the team control foul concept, so illegal screens could lead to FTs, too.)

Seems the OP must be wrongly worded. I'd bet the scenario this patched guy is talking about is if the ball is deflected, bounces on the playing surface and then bounds back up into the hands of the inbounder who is still OOB. (But ball hasn't hit OOB yet.)

At least that's what I'm going with for you, BallBasketball. Work with me here.

Only if the ball turns red and blue while in flight and then changes shape into Optimus Prime.

Depending on the age of an adult, we grew up with that cartoon which is now a movie.

Peace
