When I give an explanation on a rule, I keep it to one or two sentences, as simple as I possibly can. If they want to act incredulously, they can do so as I'm walking away, having explained my call.

The last time I had to explain a "confusing" rule (a backcourt violation), the coach kept interrupting me. I finally said "Would you like an explanation or not?" He said "No", and that was the end of it. I hope he looked up the rule later.

I promise you he didn't. 99% of the time, I'm limiting my comments to 5 words. Sometimes, it's just "That's not the rule, Coach."

For JV/V coaches should have to pass a simplified rules test. Too many wachos shouting 3 seconds and that was a backcourt when they are just ignorant of the rules.

That's why the "List" exists.

How about parents, too? Amazing the things I "learn" listening to confident angry parents . . . I particularly love the blood curdling shrieks for a three second call while multiple tips and putbacks are taking place in the key . . .

How about when you don't call the "reach"? That's one of my favorites!

In Wyoming, the HC is required to take the same open book test we do. Our small group has invited the local coaches to take the test with us. (We never do a V game locally, only sub-V)
