My guess that he changed his eye position when the thrown ball sailed so high and when he reset, the play was already over (his foot was in there).

Tough call at full speed no matter how you look at it though.

Remember, many of us only knew he missed it after a slow motion replay or two.

But the reason these are posted are for learning purpose. I don't know what else he could've done to get it right. He may have just simply missed it.
