3 man mechanics
I was flipping back and forth between two college games on TV today: NC State vs. Clemson & Baylor vs. Kansas St. Both were using 3 umpires but I saw different mechanics with similar situations.
R1 on first base, no other runners. One umpire in A position. Second field umpire in one game however was in B while in the other game the umpire was in C. Is this just a comfort issue? Which is "correct?"

Used to be "C". Then it evolved to optional. Now some conferences are using only "B" or are "strongly" recommending only "B". Rationale given by some conference supervisors is that vast majority of plays taken at 2nd are by F6 and umpires have a better chance of being "screened" when in C.

I'll agree if the umpire is properly positioned in Deep B, otherwise you're looking at elbows and butts, and you're guessing.

Position question...
Has anyone ever seen BU in (C+) position? I made up the c+ position but, had a partner with R1 set up between short and third, ever seen this? Even with R1 and R2?

In 3-man, I like Deep B a lot better than Deep C. |
