Can a runner jump over the catcher or any player trying to put a tag on them. Or do they have to try and stay away from the tag by sidestepping or sliding.
Fed and OBR Ruling. The runner was coming to home and the catcher had the ball and plate blocked off. It was a bang bang play and the runner jumped over catcher. [Edited by klp3515 on Jun 17th, 2003 at 01:31 PM] |

the defensive player must belaying on the ground, as if they have dove for a ball, for that play to be legal.
That's the FED ruling. 8-4-2c (note). Penalty is the ball stays alive and runner is out. The runner can also hurdle over an outstretched arm I believe. OBR has no ruling that I am aware of. I know as Garth mentioned, many local leagues or summer programs do have rules which prohibit this etc., Thanks David |

As others mentioned in OBR Yes although some youth leagues prohibit this. One other note concerning FED. In FED, a Runner CANNOT DIVE over a fielder whether they are lying on the ground or not. FED rule 8-4-2d. In FED a runner may jump, hurdle or leap over a fielder as long as the fielder is lying on the ground. Pete Booth
