The problem with your analogy, there are many officials calling palming when there is not palming. Or better yet, calling it when a player is not running by a defender. And I cannot tell you how many times I see a travel called when there really was not a travel in the first place.

Officials/umpires should always call rules that are obvious to everyone. If it was obvious to everyone that these bases were missed (if they were to be paying attention) then you need to call it as such. But if the umpire had to think about it and was not sure, they touched the base. No matter what you do someone is going to be upset, that is just life. Even when it is not so obvious, I have had coaches complain that bases were missed.
