I've seen it, and it doesn't work. You'll get wear marks that look crappy after a while. I've also seen it done with artificial turf. That's better, but the plastice grass is just awful for a lot of reasons.

I've seen it (well, at the HS level, not LL level) and it can work. You're just trading one set of maintenance for another.
