Interference Question
Football official and baseball fan (non-umpire) here. This is my first post in the baseball forum. Recently I was thinking about an interference situation and how it should be handled by rule. I looked it up in the rule book but couldn't find an easy answer, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.
NFHS rules. Runner on second, 1 out. Batter hits a ground ball to short, and the runner on the way to third collides with the shortstop, who is attempting to field the ball. If interference is called on the runner, by 5-1-1 (e) the ball is dead immediately and the runner is out by 8-4-2 (g). My question is: what would happen to the batter-runner in this case, since the ball is immediately dead and (presumably) the BR hasn't reached first base yet. Would this situation be handled any differently under OBR? Thanks for the help. |

If the umpire judged the INT to be a deliberate attempt to prevent a double play, both the runner and the batter/runner are out. Otherwise, the runner is out, put the batter/runner at 1st. All codes.

For FED the applicable rule is 8-1-2b:
ART. 2 . . . A batter-runner is awarded first base if: a. he is a runner because of 8-1-1c, d, e; or b. his fair ball, other than an infield fly, becomes dead (5-1-1f-1,2) and provided a preceding runner or retired runner does not interfere in such a way as to prevent a potential double play (8-4-1h). |
