I had almost the exact same play happen last year, except we had multiple runners on. I think there were R1 and R2 and the batter hit a ball in the gap for a double. There was a throw home on R1, who scored. The throw was a few feet up the third base line and as F2 went to knock it down, it deflected behind R1 who had just slid into home and was bending down to pick up the bat. When F2 picked the ball up he was directly behind R1 and hesitated for a moment then threw to third to make a play on the B/R who ended up being safe. The DC came out and wanted interference on R1, but I had nothing.

As for the OP. I've got nothing but a throwing error on the defense and a headache for the offense.

Interference, by a runner other than mentioned RLV, with a throw requires intent.
