Maybe your players need to be better instructed on how to properly apply a tag without getting spiked.

AMEN!

And, I don't heal as quickly as I used to either. These last few yrs have been tough ones for me.

The mind is willing, but, the flesh is weak. (in my case anyhow) :(

Dark, wool hats are hot in the summer time. Why we're stuck with them is another story, but we are.

But if you think wearing a helmet is any cooler, fine. Just understand you'll look like a dork, and the rest of us will be laughing quietly to ourselves.

Kinda like whenever I see a PU with a hockey mask on.

I do not think there is a need to rag on the guy about this. The bottom line is the helmet looks silly. No where have I read this is an acceptable piece of equipment for umpires. For one there is no need for a base umpire to need one. Players do not wear helmets on the field, why should we? And getting hit with the ball let alone in the head is also very rare unless you are someone that has no athletic ability what so ever. Unless this becomes mandated, and I see no reason it would be, this is just a bad idea from the start.

Peace

So you're saying Joe West needs a helmet?

p.s. base runners wear helmets.

Well the fact that Joe West is on the field is another issue all together.

Secondly, we are not base runners that are focusing running and not following the ball. Umpires follow the ball and you do not see the 8 players in the field wearing helmets do you? And we are behind the pitcher. ;)

Peace

I also advocate the safety base and outlaw steel spikes in high school games:p

I don't see the need for players to get hurt playing games when it can be prevented. Our adult softball leagues now use safety bases and made steel spikes illegal.......we do have to go to work Monday morning. Just my views.....I also wear my seat belt when I drive. Something only pussies did when I was a kid in the 60's.

Steel spikes?? Not needed. Blood on the diamond is not necessary when kids are playing the game. "Everybody raise their hands if they want to go to the emergency room to get stitches in the leg today!!":D Yes, It happens, but not when it could've been prevented.

If you have a real job and pay real medical bills, you know what I am talking about. Last year, getting spiked, cost players (parents) on my team (I also coach) over $1,000.......WTF, why must this be?

If my partner ever put one of these "toys" on, I would send him packing!
I recall hearing the same thoughts expressed when the "hockey" style mask was first being used.

Gear jockey??
I finally broke down and bought my first "West Vest". Enough of those bruises, I'm get less tough as I get older.

But honestly, I tend to overheat on summer days, if this helmet helps me stay cooler, BINGO, I'm a happy camper!:p

Lots of Laughs.....I should be a ****ing comic!!!!:D

Where the hell do you umpire - in Iraq?

What do you want to do, wrap everyone in cotton?

Please, take your whining somewhere else.

That is just BS. You an apply a tag legally and still get spiked. Getting spiked is a job hazard for middle infielders, to be expected from time to time.

Funny you should say that...I have umpired there. VERY fast infields--the packed earth makes it almost like a pool table.

A hazard? Maybe. I don't remember ever seeing a player get spiked while making a tag, though I won't deny that it does happen.

I have seen many players hit by pitchers. Several of them had to leave the game - some with broken bones. It would seem that a pitched ball is a much greater hazard. Maybe we should suggest the use of Nerf balls.

Say what? It is a good thing you won't deny and obvious you have never played middle infield.

Whether I have or haven't played a middle infield position has no relevance in this discussion.
