Strike Mechanic

At a MiLB game last night, I noticed that the plate umpire's strike call looked a bit odd to me. He was pointing with his thumb up (I always have heard it called "the gun"), I've always been told that's a no-no. Is that acceptable in some areas (at some levels) and I've always been told wrong? Just curious

There are a lot of no-nos (for the rest of us) that occur with regularity in MLB.
