New MLB Hires

Don't know if anyone saw on majorleagueumpires.com.....The new full-time hires this year are Rob Drake (West), Chad Fairchild (Reilly), James Hoye (Hirschbeck), and Adrian Johnson (McClelland).

Surf the MLB.com site some and you will find an answer, range from $84k to $300k, so these new guys are likely at the lower end.

Wow! The league just got a whole lot quicker, didn't it?

And that may sound like a whole lot of money. But factor is the miserable lives, and not to much money they made in all the years leading up it, and it's really not.

Also factor in that 99% of them will never get there, after forgoing other careers (and lives) in the process.

For all the years and games Drake has been basically a full-time fill-in umpire... he's only getting credit for 2 years of service...dang.

I think thats due to language in the CBA agreement - if you look everybody is coming in at 2 years experience and Guccione is only credited with 3 years (he was given a full-time spot last year).

Its not fair but MLB probably doesnt want to give these guys a ton of service time when they are technically fill ins.

As long as there's a huge line of guys wanting this gig, the employers will continue to call the tunes to the show.

If that's what you aspire to, hat's off to ya. I couldn't imagine living that life, especially if I had a wife and kids. You spend 10 years making nothing, and never being home, with little hope of ever making a crew. And if you do, you start out making just okay money. To make it all worthwhile ($ wise) you've got to hold on well past your prime.

Plus, if reality sets in, and decide enough is enough after eight years, then what? You're 30, with no real world skills.

Just wondering

Do you think this represents the rankings of the previous (fired) supervisors, or the new supervisors, who didn't necessarily see them work this past year?

Just asking, because, in my opinion only, AJ had a horrible year.

Not "fair"? These guys are a member of a union. They voted to approve this contract. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Not fair.

If they do not like it, they should have refused to sign it and see what happened.

I'm thinking the new guys didn't vote on anything. The ones that voted on this contract were already ML umpires and they were screwing someone else, so what did they care?
