Pro Set

Got to do a 4-man set in an 11U USSSA Global World Series in Brooklyn Park today. OBR. I was U2. No check swing appeals, no help needed on third strike catch/no-catch. Had two diving catches by F9. Only rotated to home once...no play. Was disappointed that U3 and me were the only ones in the whole place singing the national anthem while it was playing before the game. Anyone else done 4-man?

I have worked 4-man for NABA Final, USABF Final, The Area Code games at Qualcomm Stadium and Tony Gwynn Stadium, and several high school Semi-final CIF games. It's a lot of fun. My goal for next season is to work a CIF Section Final.

Good catch! Yes, he must have been to have rotated home.

I know an umpire who thinks U2 is just the group that has Bono for a front man.

Today, State Sectional in Bilgeport, Majors.

Started weird. Assignor tells me that as U2, I have to wear a 'walkie talkie' type radio to relay substitutions in to the press box where the TD is stationed. The field layout has the pressbox just beyond straightaway center field.

I seriously thought he was joking until I see the TD grab two of the radios! Then, he passes one to U1 and the other to U3 and says, "you call in changes for visitors and (turning to the other Umpire) you for Home".

I nearly fell down laughing! The assignor had been razzing my azz for having to wear the radio. He thought he was getting one over on me. But since HE was U1, the joke was on him.

Still, it was weird! I understand why some feel the way they do about Little League!

We used the NFHS Umpire manual to review responsibilities and sitches before the game. It lists U1 as home, U2 as first (not Bono), U3 as second and U4 as home. Is OBR different in how it refers to the 4?

When would you rotate to home from U2? Isn't that the exclusive domain of U1?

He just explained how the first base umpire was listed as U2 in the manual they used for this game. So he was rotating from first.

Just another example of FED driving REAL umpires nuts.

Yeah, i'm not a fan of the FED umpiring manual or case book how they label umpires and runners.

In the CCA and other books, the PU is listed as PU, first base is U1, Second base is U2, and third base is U3. Much simpler.

Tee, yet another thing you can fix in your NFHS publications!

Our association uses NFHS for most of our games and no one had a book with OBR 4-man mechanics.

Yes. I was on 3B and nearly died of boredom.

That is weird. Why not just give one radio to the PU since, you know, he's the one who takes the subs?
