In sanctioned ball, the states I work and have worked in fine you for missing an assignment. You are suspended and don't work again until you pay the fine.

In summer ball, I work for guys that require a "deposit" to cover a missed assignment. If you miss an assignment, the guy who worked solo gets two full game fees, and the teams are reimbursed 1/2 fee each from the assignor. The guy who stuck you does not work again unless he puts down another deposit. (unless a very good reason is offered, he probably won't work again anyway) Very similar to sanctioned ball.

At the end of the year, you get your deposit back.
