Run Down Wide Turn
I had an interesting run down situation between 3B and HP regarding rule:
7.08 Any runner is out when -- (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner's baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely Relay throw to to F5 @ 3B, who throws the ball to F2 @ HP. R1 stops ten feet from F2, makes a wide turn more than three feet away from the baseline to change direct (not avoid a tag), runs and slide directly to 3B and beats the throw and tage back into 3B. Defensive team's coach wants R1 out for running out of the baseline. I have nothing. Did I get this correct? |

If he's 10 feet from the fielder with the ball, I'm inclined to allow a "wide turn," within limits. HTBT, but it sounds like a good call.
I feel compelled to add that I follow Peter Osborne's philosophy regarding a call of "out of the baseline" on rundowns: it's a great way to end them quickly!
