Didn't know that........

So what exactly has to happen to use the replay system? What am I missing

Much like a coach's request that you ask your partner for help, the crew chief decides if the crew wants help.

At the Giants/D-backs game last night (Monday) at Pacific ballpark, a Bengie Molino home run was caught by a fan in the first row of the bleachers. AZ mgr. Bob Melvin wanted crew chief Tim McClellan to get replay help. The crew conferred while the high-definition big screen replayed the catch, after which McClellan decided they did not need help, home run stands. I didn't notice whether any of the crew was watching the replay.

If you didn't notice whether any of the crew were watching the replay, how do you know that McClelland decided they did not need help from the replay? Maybe they watched the replay just like you did and determined that it was truly a home run.

Let me know how this replay thing is working out. I understand that replay has still not overturned a single call. Let's hear it for the umpires!

So let me get this straight...all 4 umpires decide they don't need a replay...so no replay?

I would bet that if 3 of the 4 said no replay needed...then no replay, right? I know if I'm on a crew and one said " I'm not sure" but the other 3 said "we are sure"..that better be the end of it.

There must be a standard in place. Anyone know for sure how it works?

As stated earlier, the crew chief decides if it is necessary to use the replay system. I would think the crew chief would take into account the opinions of his partners. Perhaps more than one had a clear view of the play, so no replay was necessary in McClelland's opinion.

Thanks..I missed the stated earlier part

Maybe. I meant only to imply that the crew might have gotten help on whether to go to the MLB war room replay for help, which would be an interesting, perhaps unanticipated, twist on the implementation of the rule.

BTW, after the inning, the umps again conferred, this time between the mound and second base, and little Timmy Lincecum had to shoo the whole crew out of the way to let Molino have his throw down to second. Fun at the ballpark. :)

Do you mean, Little Timmy Who Should Be The Cy Young Winner In The National League Lincecum? I hope he gets to 20 wins, because he's more deserving than Webb or Volquez, and Sabbathia's time with the Tribe won't count in his favor. Lincecum is by far the best pitcher in the NL this year.

Knowing the Giants, they will trade him next year for 3 minor leaguers and a team mascot.

No contest....all in all the Giants had a good season. 16 rookies on a 25 maan roster...pretty impressive...but they still need someone with power in the lineup......
