Need Some Help

R2, R3, 1 out. On a squeeze bunt, the pitcher field the ball and throws to the plate too late to get R3. The catcher then tries to throw the BR out at 1st and the BR causes interference by running out of the running lane.

Please place all runners, citing rule references, J-R interpretations, etc.

There was a recent thread on this very play. Maybe somebody can steer you to it.

The "answer" was that the run scored, according to, I think, J/R. In other words, the stipulation that all runners return TOP when the BR commits INT before reaching 1B is waived in this case, as I remember because of the "finality" of the run scoring. However, R2 would be sent back to 2B.

Strict interpretation of the OBR book would send R3 back to 3B after the INT call.

The issue arises because there's an "intervening play" before the attempt to put out BR and the subsequent INT. As a result, on the INT runners are returned to their TOI base, not their TOP base. Hence, the run scores.

The intervening play citation is in the PBUC (NAPBL) manual, BTW.

intervening play

This is the earlier thread. The question involved a conflict between the PBUC and J/R on whether the runners other than R3 returned TOI (PBUC) or TOP (J/R).
