Red face Mechanics - Position A - 3 man - Question

Hi,

I have gotten myself into trouble in Position A.

I have had different positions explained and would like to try find a (official) consensus.

In the 3 man system when there is a runner at one the 3B BU is in the diamond and 1B BU on the line. Right? But where exactly do you stand?

In one of the pick off plays it looked to me like the 1B player got the runner on the shoulder before his hands hit the bag then after the inning one of my colleagues mentioned that I was calling 'over the play' and should move a little off the line and closer to see the play better. So I did.

The next game the same situation. I'm now about 5ft from the bag and about 1ft off the line. A throw comes in, but is about 3ft to the 1B's right, the runner dives for the bag and the fielder dives for the ball, but...it bounces under the runner and hits me. I had absolutely no chance to dodge that one.

I then have to endure another lecture about being too close to the play.

Please help, where do I stand to avoid getting whacked but also to see the play to make the right calls?

Thanks

Close enough to see, but far enough away to not get hit. What could be clearer?

I generally stand so I can see F1 just past the runner's left side (with a "normal" lead-off).

R1. U2 in position C. U1 (you) in modified position A.

A step or two off the line, 6-8 ft. behind the base, not indirect line from mound to first. From that angle you want to see R1's hands back to the base.

Of course, a crappy throw is your fault!
