Pac-10 Baseball

The University of Oregon has scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference to announce an athletic department reorganization that will include reinstating baseball.

Oregon, the lone Pacific-10 Conference school without a baseball program, hasn't fielded a team since the 1980-81 season. It will resume competition in 2009, according to the Register-Guard of Eugene.

Ducks athletic director Pat Kilkenny recently told The Oregonian that no topic has been raised among fans more often than baseball since he took over the department this spring.

The Register-Guard also reported that the school will announce the addition of a women's sport today. There has been speculation that the Ducks' wrestling program will be dropped as part of the department changes.

I guess I can't call it the PAC-9 anymore.

Regards,

Also, this year's Gonzaga U. team and Washington Huskies over the past few year have demonstrated that Northwest teams can compete well with warm-weather schools.

The University of Oregon dropped baseball after the 1981 season to divert the funds to cover additional women's teams to comply with Title 9.
