An Interesting Take
I'm a subscriber to Netflix and just got games 1 and 2 of the 1975 World Series between the BoSox and the Big Red Machine.
But anyhoo, I'm mostly interested in how the games were umpired back then. I was 7 when the Series originally took place and didn't care for baseball one iota. Today, however, and as an umpire, I'm looking at the game very differently now. Game one had Art Franz (AL) behind the plate and Game two had Nick Colosi (NL) working the dish. Now I have a better idea of how vastly different the pitches were called when you had the AL using "the raft" (That's the outside Balloon Chest Protector for those of you in Rio Linda) and the NL using the inside protector. As a matter of fact, Colosi set up practically at catcher height when calling pitches. I just find it very interesting. Your thoughts?? Last edited by Bassman; Sun Jul 08, 2007 at 10:36am. |

Whoopsie!! It was Nick Colosi working game two, not Dick Stello. Sorry Folks.
BTW, after Colosi balked Louie Tiant that sent Joe Morgan to second, the announcers were commenting on the differences between the AL and NL umpires. One statement that proved prophetic was how he (announcer) wished that the umpires were merged into one body. Last edited by Bassman; Sat Jul 07, 2007 at 11:56pm. |
