Bases on overthrows
I had a colleague ask me about this situation the other night and I was not sure if I gave him the right answer.
This is the play he had in a game. R1 when the ball gets hit high and far in the outfield. R1 decided to run for whatever reason and he rounded second base and was on his way to third when the fly ball was caught so he had to go back to first. Now the ball was coming back on a relay and runner was between 1st and 2nd base on his way BACK to first base when the ball got overthrown out of play. Question asked was what base does the runner get? I told my colleague first of that he would get two bases from the last base legally occupied at the time of the throw since the play was from the outfield. Second I told him that since the fly ball was caught, the runner was legally STILL only entitled to first base eventhough he crossed second so he would get 3rd base due to the overthrow. Was I right ? We are playing ORB.
