Neither, he's a Pirates fan (at least he better still be a Pirates fan).

This is the recap of the game, and Davis' explanation is about halfway through the article. I did quote it in its entirety as reported by ESPN.

oh...I was watching the video...thanks for clarifying.

O.k....while flipping through games last night on MLB Extra Innings...I saw

(1) Gerry Davis miss the steal call.
(2) Jeff Nelson miss a pick-off call at first base in Atlanta.
(3) Balkin' Bob incorrectly call a homerun a double that went against Colorado.
(4) Another umpire (I forget which game...at this point) miss a homerun/double call.

The point of this post? There is none. My post is a WOBW...just like the OP.

Yeah, but at least he got to toss Hurdle as a consolation prize.

So what! Gerry Davis kicked a call and the Yankees (because they didn't bother to get a few insurance runs) lost the game! All is right with the world and Gerry will move to 1st base tonight.

All Yankee fans do is whine - it's always someone else's fault! BWAHAHAHAHA!

Yep! I agree! And why miss a chance to kick a dog when he's down?

Go O's and Sox!:p

I am an avid baseball fan as well as an amateur official. I tend to watch the umpires just as much as the rest of the game. For whatever reason, it appears to me that there have been many more missed calls this season because the umpires were not in position to see the play. I agree with the person that said that Jerry Davis was lazy....he wasn't just not hustling, he was walking SLOWLY. Another play last night was missed when the home plate umpire was out of position to see the play and called Johjima out when he was clearly safe because he was blocked by the catcher on the play.

It's one thing to miss calls. We all do it. But at that level, to be out of position because of either lack of effort or not being prepared is completely unacceptable. They get paid the big bucks for their effort. To get paid that much and not put out the effort is disgraceful.

Speaking of blown calls

Did anyone see the 15 inning Cubs/Pirates game the other night?

Runner on 1st and 3rd sinking line drive to left, U4 goes out for catch/no catch, U3 heads toward 3rd anticipating R1 going 1st to 3rd, instead R1 hesitates and the throw comes to 2nd behind R1. U3 is still running back to 2nd in infield grass when the tag is made. he's in terrible position and on the move, never makes a signal and it looks like he glances toward U2(never had a wide enough angle to see where U2 was) to see if he was going to make a call.
It certainly appeared to be an out but the call was safe.

I don't know 4 man mechanics, but it seems to me that something was blown here.
Once U4 went out did U3 have R1 at 2nd and 3rd? If so he just overcommitted to third. If not, I'm assuming U2 should have rotated to 2nd.
I'm curious to know the rotation in this situation.
Can anyone help?

The PU miscalled a play at the plate last night in the Tigers/Mariners game as well. It just goes to show that we are all human.

Under CCA mechanics, if U3 goes out and the ball drops, then it's a standard three-person rotation on this play. UIC rotates to third, U2 has R1 at second, U1 has BR touching third and rotates home when R1 commits to third.

Pro mechanics might be different.

Sorry, I mis labeled the umps.
In this situation, U2 moved to third when U3 went out, you could see it in the replay. He then was running back to 2nd when the throw came in behind the runner. Something seemed out of whack. If UIC went to third, U2 clearly forgot his mechanics.

I made the worst call I've ever made at a play which wasn't even close at first base. The kid was out by a step and I called him safe. The game was a blowout, so I didn't catch too much lip. My partner knew I knew I made a mistake. With a bid smile, he asked me, "Was that your nephew running to first base!"
