a different scenerio for a balk call?

runner on 1st. pitcher feints a move to an unoccupied 3rd, as he is off the rubber turns toward 1st to throw. runner attempts to advance to 2nd. pitcher throws to 2nd for the putout. is there a balk somewhere in there?

btw, this is 13/14 age little league.

thanks for your help.

It's a balk to throw or feint to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play at that base. No one was on third; no one was advancing to third, so it's a balk.

No it isn't a balk. Question says pitcher was NOT on the rubber. He can fake to heaven and it isn't a balk.

Cool

bellsjc,

The OP says that the F1 is off the rubber when he turns to 1B.

When I read it, I inferred that the F1 had been in contact when he initiated his move to unoccupied 3B, and, in feinting to 3B, his foot came off the rubber.

If that's what happened, this was a balk, as Bob J. suggests.

If he was off the rubber the whole time, I agree it would not be a balk.

F1 is restricted from feinting to 1st base only when there are runners on base. F1 may feint or fake to 2nd or 3rd regardless if there is anyone on those bases. Read your rules, people! F1 is only in trouble if he throws to 3rd with no one there. All F1 is doing here is pulling the 3rd to 1st move with only a runner on 1st. If he catches the runner off 1st base, good for him! Woe to the stupid runner when he returns to the dugout!

I beg to differ. When was the last time you read them?

If there is a runner, or runners, it is a balk when --

(d) The pitcher, while touching his plate, throws, or feints a throw to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play;

And, from J/R:

Quote:
[It is a balk if a pitcher]

10. steps (i.e., steps and throws, or steps and feints a throw, or steps only) to an unoccupied base unless:

(a) there is an appeal at the unoccupied base, or
(b) a runner is advancing toward and trying to acquire such base.

Ozzman, i wouldn't expect this one from you!!

It's ok, we all have a brain fart sometimes. Best to do it on here than on the field.
