For shinguards, I still use the Umpshins I got from Honig's for my softball starter set. They are comfortable and have taken a couple of hard shots, some from shavers, with no problem. I see no reason to upgrade my shinguards. (I did get a K1 chest protector vest, which I like, but that's a different thread.) I now most often work 9 to 14 year old baseball, but hope to move up to high school baseball next year.

Does anyone think upgrading to GD-quality shinguards is worth it? If so, why? In other words, is there a significant risk of serious injury that upgraded shinguards might prevent?

Also, if I can only afford one new shinguard next year, should I get a left or a right?

I don't see why these wouldn't be just fine for the HS level.

ok guys and GALS, enough fun over my statement now. I bought gear once from my local sporting good store, and they sell shin guards individually, they are individually priced. Under QTY i always thought it meant 1 Shin, not a pair. We'll now i know. the hard way... :o

To go with the idea of an HSM I'm thinking of moving to the HSS (hockey style shins).

I bet they'd cut down on a lot of passed balls.

It sure does - although I find once I go down into the scissors I can't get up again

I'm going with a new chest protector too. It looks a little hot but the protection is excellent.

You guys have me convinced - this winter when I'm playing hockey I'm going to try one of those Umpire Style Masks (USMs!!!)

SanDiegoSteve Mon Sep 25, 2006 07:28pm
