Pitcher Wearing Sunglasses

All, just a quick question.

Yesterday I had a coach complaining about a pitcher wearing sunglasses. I know of no rule set that prohibits this. The coach's contention is that the pitcher was 'deceiving' baserunners by concealing his EYES??

It was hard to contain my laughter. He was actually becoming aggitated, so the pitcher voluntarily switched to clear. By the way, both the clear and sunglasses were prescription lenses. He probably should have pitched without glasses. I wonder if the coach would have liked that better.

Cool

This situation is fully covered under 12.06(c)(2).

Quote:
"Rule 12.06

(c)(2) During the course of the game ONLY COACHES are allowed to make up rules which have no foundation in the text, official interpretations, or history of the rules. APPROVED RULING: While the umpire may, at his sole discretion, entertain discussion of such made up rules with the coach (strictly for the entertaiment value), there will be NO ENFORCEMENT of any such rules."

Does this same coach complain when you wear sunglasses on the bases or behind the dish because he can't see your eyes focus on the play and he thinks you're lookin at his wife in the stands?

Ask the coach, point blank, "Find me the rule where sunglasses are prohibited on the pitcher, and I'll have them removed", until then, he can wear them.

Now, some sunglasses that have a "Mirrored" surface may be distracting to the batter and myself, these I will have changed to a less distracting pair.

Here's another question, and this one is way out there in left field. I'd love to see it happen because it would be hilarious.

If the entire other team were wearing dancing tu tu's and your players couldn't concentrate because they were laughing so hard, would you have the other team change out of their uniforms? According to the rules, all players shall be dressed uniformally. If everyone's wearing a tu tu, that's their uniform for the game.

I've had coaches question my sunglasses as an umpire and I quickly remind them that any such comments put them on a fast track to the parking lot.

Wow,

What about the kid with "Transition" lenses that automatically convert to sunglasses in light or cold?

You can't make him remove his glasses...that would be a safety issue!
I can see it now...Major League...WILD THING!

Tell the coach to get a life...play ball!

Where was there a ZZ Top reference?

"Wild Thing?" Sorry, no contribution from the Tres Hombres to that song. Conicidentally, though, I will be attending a performance by the author of Wild Thing, a mostly country-folk singer songwriter by the name of Chip Taylor, next weekend.

I'm not sure where it went, but PWL made an inferrence to the song "Cheap Sunglasses" in this thread, which is a ZZ Top tune.

Yes, I don't know where that post went either, but PWL said, "what really knocked me out was the cheap sunglasses....oh yeah!" Which is definitely from that Little Ol' Band From Texas.

No, but I'm not going to entertain a coach who thinks I'd be a better umpire if I squint.

Man..., talk about pissin' off the umpire for no good reason! I'm guessing the coach had someplace he'd rather be & just wanted a good excuse to go.
