Replacement's Errors Compounded

The replacement umpire makes a mistake, but instead of eating it he compounds it. Even after a 15-minute discussion, his replacement partners don't help him or save their own credibility. The truculent radio announcer repeatedly disparages the crew. Makes us all look bad. This strike is hurting everyone. Listen for yourself:

I saw this May 3 incident referenced at this fan blog.

The underlying issue is that on a two-out, third strike in the dirt, F2 flipped the ball to PU, and then B/R took off for 1B.

I think, in the wake of the Eddings sitch last fall, we discussed many variations on this play. Did we discuss the situation where the umpire is actually holding the game ball while it happens?

I saw a game that had the right fielder mistakenly believe that he had just caught the last out of the half inning. He flipped the ball into the stands to look 'big league' and started trotting in. His team mates started screaming about the guy tagging up and he ran back and grabbed the ball from the shocked kid in the stands. After a looooonnnnngggg delay, the crew moved the runner to third and took the run off the board. That was a regular crew.

Please don't tell us that this strike is hurting everyone. I slept fine last night and will tonight. When my friends kick calls, I don't kvetch and blog about it. If you are so concerned about that crew being inept, you should contact the league and offer your services...unless you can't. (wink, wink)
