I moved to PA from NY, where white logos on plate shoes were allowed. PIAA insists that white logos on any shoes are flatly prohibited. (Of course, this is the same state that makes soccer officials wear vertical black-and-white stripes on the field.)

I was planning to buy new plate shoes anyhow, but the whole "no white at ALL" restriction severely restricts my options. Has anyone here tried blacking out that N on these shoes, and if so, does it actually stay blacked out when you clean off the shoes? New Balance makes decent enough sneakers, and if these are comfortable, I think I might take the plunge--but apparently I have to come up with a way to keep that logo obscured.
Check out Purchase Officials. They offer a New Balance 450 Model in all black ($3 more) is probably worth it than blacking out the white one.

If the "N" is "white leather" (as opposed to white cloth), then paint remover or lacquer thinner should remove the white. Polish the N as you would the rest of the shoe.

just rec'd my new new balance 350
base shoes - "high gloss", they look great and feel even better. i'm in PA - i understand that PIAA require all black shoes. but are the shoe police really going to give me a hard time about my white "N" - i think they look pretty good as is.
thoughts????

I guess I wasn't as clear as I should have been; it's plate shoes I'm after. $90 is too big an investment to ruin if it turns out I actually can't get that white N turned black.

GGK, I'd guess if your association is anything like mine, odds are that looks are going to be extremely important, particularly if you have any aspirations of working postseason baseball. At our last meeting, I'd guess we spent as much time fighting about uniforms as we did discussing rules, which is somewhat disconcerting. Which group in PA are you with? There seem to be a lot of PIAA guys on this board.

abington chapter. we briefly discussed a handout which listed standard ump uniforms - this included a mention of the all black shoe requirement.

Any feedback from the guys that have worn the NB plate shoe? I got my pair yesterday for $70. Hopefully I won't any grief on the white "N".
