Found out about 3 hrs before my game tonight that I had a change of partner and my new partner was the Prez of our chapter.. I have worked one game w/ him before but was on the bases.. this time I was behind the plate.. so this was a major evaluation day for me.. being that I am a 2nd year proby in the chapter and am up for active status at the end of the year.. needless to say... I was a bit nervous..
this was a modified game..( middle school) usually these games are horrible.. but I must say.. both teams played excellent.. pitchers could throw strikes... fielders made plays.. etc.. Well I got a very good evaluation from him.. so I am pumped.. next year I just might move up to varisty.. thanks to all you guys on the board.. you all have really helped me in my progress as an umpire!! |

The next time you're working with those vets, it would be a good time to make sure you have a good pre-game. Take that oppotunity. They aren't there to hurt you. They want to be as comfortable as you. mick |

Mick,
We always show up to games at least 30 minutes prior to gametime.. to have a pregame.. I must say that I have not yet experianced a Vet treating me as a lowly proby.. my chapter is a great group.. Thanks for your reply! |

The Flip side of that!
Several years ago, I had a similar experience. ;-(
I was working a 16-17 select playoff game in the A.M. and then a Legion game about 10 miles away with an ECPECTED hour between games. Different associations (MISTAKE NUMBER 1). The first game went into extra innings, I was doing the plate and ended up getting to the Legion game in the top of the second inning. Our association pres was the assistant coach of the visiting team and reamed me a new one as I trotted on the field. I explained the situation and he got worse but I took my punishment and said nothing. My first call of the game was to call his player out on a pick-off at first. He got obusive but I let it go. The next inning I had to balk his pitcher and he went off the deep end and I tossed him. I figured that would be my last game with that association. Quite the contrary, I got more and better game. That was a real lesson for me. Call your game no matter who is watching or who is involved. Buster
