I received two of the new shirts designed by Scott Adams this morning. One gray and one blue. I cannot express enough how little justice is done to the shirts in the pictures I posted. These shirts are simply awesome. They are lighter than the Honigs or Cliff Kleen, and just slightly heavier than the +POS. They will do well in keeping you cool during those hot summer games. The color schemes are not as obtrusive as some might have thought. I think they are unique and well thought out color schemes. I wear a +POS BB2000 chest protector. These new shirts do a much better job of covering an undershirt with their extended sleeve and shouder lenghth for that large of a protector. I think Scott has designed a great product for us to consider. Tim. |

If you would like information on pricing and ordering, you can contact him at: [email protected] In past disussions with Scott, I think I remember him saying the price for individual shirts was just under $30.00. It's a great product! Tim. |

For my own little market survey, I emailed the photo of the navy shirts to 65 amateur umpires, 6 professional umpires and one former professional umpire. Not one responded that they would purchase the shirt if it wasn't required by their association/employer. Four of the pro umpires had a very similar comment to: "You mean they've got trim on the shoulders AND the coilar and sleeves? Why?" One amateur umpire suggested a serious use for it: "Maybe a tournament UIC that is supervising but not working would like to wear it so he'll stand out." Edited to add: I don't want to give the impression that I conducted a scientific survey. The audience was not selected at random. The umpires were all on my mailing list which does not include any Little League umpires. Also, the number of professional respondents was too small to be significant. The results are anecdotal only. Another comment I received but neglected to note was this: "Unless that shirt was required, I doubt any partner would have one, so it would be a waste for me to buy one." I guess that argument would have no bearing on those who work one-man games. [Edited by GarthB on Dec 24th, 2005 at 02:56 PM]

Garth,
Did you show them the shirts from e-bay, or the actual shirts which are being sold? The ones on e-bay were prototypes which were subsequently redesigned. I am not wild about the Navy colored ones myself, since there are too many colors involved. The grey ones and the black ones aren't bad looking at all.

The negative comments were not about the number of colors, but rather about the frequency and total amount of trim work.

Unless your entire organization adopts a new style of shirt, why would you buy one? Rather, unless you know that all of your partners will have the matching shirt, why would you wear it? Like Garth, the design doesn't suit me. We aren't supposed to draw attention to ourselves out there. Looking good is one thing, but this is like saying, "Hey look at me, I'm making a fashion statement."
Maybe Biggies' group is trying to step out. If so, it sounds like Scott Adams earned the free plug. That is what this is after all.
