Welcome to the Board and thanks for that first post. A ball hit off the plate being a Foul ball is one of the common misconceptions of the average fan. Just look at the foul lines and see where they intersect. They come together at the tip of the plate hence the plate is entirely in fair territory (except the black edge which isn't really part of the plate except when it comes to calling strikes). It's the same in ALL baseball and softball. It's a fair ball. If the ball hits BEHIND or to the SIDE of the plate, is not touched, and rolls fair before passing 1st or 3rd, it's fair.

There are many top clinicians who recommend that we do indeed call the black when it is showing. Jim Evans can be counted among this crowd.

Technically, the black is not a part of the plate. It is supposed to be buried. But if it's showing, I'll be calling it. I don't know about the rest of you.

As long as you call a runner safe when he only touches the black, OK

OR even if the runner misses it by only an inch on a game ending home run! Mr Porter is renowned for that laudible attitude to the plate. (grin)
