If you remember back when they first came out, NCAA approved them and then quickly disallowed them becuase there were a few instances of a ball getting through.
Hell, even Sylvia Parsons(while she was still alive) at +POS told people that the shouldn't use them for baseball.

And yes, I have actually seen a foul ball go through the mask.
Luckily they Ump didn't get seriously hurt, a broken nose and some stitches for his face.
