MLB game, 1 out, runner on 1st. batter hits what should be a double play but the runner on 3rd crosses home plate before the 3rd out is made. Does the run score and if not is there any situation where the run would score on the 3rd out

On the normal DP, if the batter-runner is put out and is the 3rd out, the run does not score. Now if the ball is hit - say up the 1st base line to F3 - the defense may attempt a reverse DP. Now the batter-runner is the 2nd out and the run may score. The play becomes a timing play.

If both outs were force outs, the run doesn't score. If the second half of the DP wasn't a force and the run scores before the out occurs, the run counts.

For example, R1, R3 with a ball hit to F3 who steps on 1B and then thows to 2B. The force has been removed, so if R3 makes it home before R1 is tagged, the run scores.

Or the situation in the Giants game the other day. R1, R3. A.J. Pierzynski (R1) overruns second and then gets tagged. In meantime R3 scored.
